Andre Michaux described Rosa Nivea in "Flora Boreali-Americana" (1803) from specimens found in Georgia. The rose was also named Rose sinica in 1789 from specimens found in China. The Chinese specimens had been in cultivation in 1759. However, since the R. sinica name was already used by Linneaus to describe another rose, the Chinese rose Rosa chinensis, the name was invalidated and the name from the Georgia specimens is used.
