Rosa pimpinellifolia, the burnet rose, is typically found on sand dunes or limestone, and can easily spread to cover large areas and can grow up to 2 meters high. While associated with Scotland as a symbolic native plant and the many references in Scottish songs and poems, it is also native to western, central, and southern Europe plus northwest Africa. Its flowers are 2-4 cm. in diameter and are cream or white and rarely a pale pink and produce hips ranging from dark purple to black. The stems have stiff brisles and prickles with reddish leaves, ranging from bright scarlet to a deep maroon.
