When the communists first entered Saigon, Nguyen Minh had hopeful expectations for a unified and peaceful country but instead found the Communist government intent on forcing their ideas on the population. As a result, Nguyen Minh describes leaving Vietnam via boat in 1979 and the trouble he and the other refugees encountered both at sea and when they reached land, in particular the inhumane treatment meted out on the female refugees.
