Item Text: After seeing the first explosion, there was momentary confusion among those a few blocks away near the intersection with Hereford St. It sounded like a canon, but the smoke rising above the buildings indicated something larger and much worse. After the second explosion, which appeared much larger and much louder as it was closer, nearly everyone recognized something terrible was happening. Within moments, police halted runners and seemingly within seconds, motorcycle police and other police vehicles came streaming down Boylston St from the Mass ave area. The crowd dispersed, quickly walking away.

This story was collected by the Boston Globe in the days immediately following the Boston Marathon Bombing. GlobeLab collected these anonymous stories on the Boston.com website and donated them to the Our Marathon Archive. We are grateful for this contribution, which gives insight into how Bostonians and visitors to the city understood the bombing events in their immediate aftermath.
