Alejandro A. Lanusse and Tomás Sánchez de Bustamante interview with Robert A. Potash
Description:
(Part 2 of 2) Lanusse describes his participation in the military overthrowing of Arturo Illia on June 28, 1969. He discusses the presidential periods of Onganía and Levingston and defenestration. In the case of Onganía, he recollects the ex-president assumed power with unconditional support of the military, however, he excluded them from government issues and was overthrown. Levingston was in power for around a year before the “Junta” took control. Lanusse refers to his own presidential period and describes his past intentions of forging a “Gran Acuerdo Nacional” (Great National Agreement), which would include Perón forces and the army. He refers to Perón coming back to Argentina, his beliefs and his party retaking the government. Lanusse is not optimistic about the Argentinian situation; he describes how the best solutions for certain issues, such as going back to democracy progressively, could not be applied, because of the interests and political pressures of diverse groups.
