Title (alt.):
A DIVORCE CASE. - My client is not one of these presumptuous husbands who appear here before you in order to boast that they have been deceived by their wives with nothing but vague suspicions for saying so... Thank God, we have proof... We have plenty of it, and holding his head high, and without fear of contradiction, the gentleman can say loud and clear... that he is... that he is... well, that he is what he is.... Charivari
Description:
A lawyer is defending his client during a divorce suit. In a court hearing, the important oratorical "activity" took place between the prosecutor, the defendant's advocate and to a certain extent the presiding judge. The jury, although important in delivering their final decision of a case, was hardly ever shown by Daumier. The verbal maneuvering took place between the two main opponents, while the judges remained impartial. This may be the reason why Daumier often showed them as sleeping or yawning, while the prosecutor or the advocate were delivering passionate oratories.
