Title (alt.):
- I want to go on this ship with you right away, Papa...... because my nanny said that the deluge will come again, and the only ones who will be saved will be the animals on the ark of Mr. Leviathan!........ Charivari
Description:
A little boy tells his father that his nanny told him Leviathan will act like Noah's Ark should the Earth flood again. The Leviathan: a monster which appeared in various biblical citations. In this case the Leviathan was the biggest ship ever built during that period. It was designed by Brunel the famous ship engineer in 1853 and was more than 200 m long. It was to carry more than 1000 passengers when it started it's transatlantic travel between England and America in 1858. The maiden voyage took place between Southampton and New York. The undertaking was no commercial success, after an explosion took place on the ship, killing five crew members. In 1865 the ship was reactivated under the name "Great Eastern" and laid cables between Europe and the United States. The initial financial difficulties described here in this print, suggested that the shareholders should show their engagement in the company by doing the trip on the crossing to America. Eventually no passengers were transported any longer and the vessel was used for laying cables. It was eventually demolished on January 1, 1939.
