The top button of the suit jacket is just visible, and the jacket lapels have a contrasting edge. He has a bushy beard and mustache, and medium length curly white hair. Underneath the photo is Trowbridge's signature, taken from his autobiography. Photgraph is in a large and deep wood frame, with multiple concentric rectangles alternating brown, gold, and black. The innermost rectangles are textured. Description by the donor: "Framed portrait (late-19th century deep wood frame; UV glass, and acid-free archival materials) of renowned Arlington author John Townsend Trowbridge. Also exhibited at pop-up at Smith Museum in 2010. Portrait is a frontispiece engraving bearing a facsimile of Trowbridge's signature, from his autobiography "My Own Story," 1903."
