ASCENSION DE JÉSUS-CHRIST. D'après le Tableau original de M. Brrdhkmann.
Title (alt.):
THE ASCENSION OF JESUS CHRIST. After the original painting by M.Brrdhkmann.. Caricature
Description:
The lithograph represents Christ ascending towards the sky and spears pointing towards him. In contrast to the conventional ascension pictures where the apostles are watching Christ disappear in the skies, in this print the spears are obstructing his return to earth. Daumier is trying to show the saturation of the general public in traditional art. The print must be seen as an attack against conventional painting as supported by the Academy.
