Description:
In 1851, as the impression deepened that there would be an Empire, the Society of the 10th of December held rally after rally in favor of the Bonapartiste cause. The President's newspapers threw mud at the opposition in Parliament. The President held reviews of troops, who were motivated by extra rations and liberal amounts of wine. Paid "claqueurs" were ready to applaud and shout "Long live the Emperor," although at this time, Napoléon was only the elected President, and not yet Emperor of France. Daumier shows Ratapoil trying to sell cudgels on the boulevards to win over supporters for Napoléon.
