This portrait of an American Indian was painted by Charles Osgood (1809-1890) in 1837-1838. It was formerly identified as portrait of Ninigret I or Ninigret II, based on information provided by the donors. Research in 1998 by the John Nicholas Brown Center at Brown University suggests that this portrait might actually be of a Pequot tribe sachem. Artwork 01.192
