Title (alt.):
Charivari. - Why..... you told me that children are not allowed in this house.... - Sir.......these are not children.....these are the sons of the owner!......
Description:
A man confronts a concierge about the appearance of children in the apartment building, when he had been told that children were not allowed. The concierge replies that they are not merely children, but the sons of the owner. Due to the redesign of the Parisian avenues by HAUSSMANN many houses were demolished in favor of representative boulevards. This contributed to a serious shortage of apartments. Daumier is illustrating this problem in many caricatures at that time, especially in the series “Locataires et Propriétaires”.
