L' ARBRE DE LA LIBERTÉ. - Comment! pas un ami pour lui crier: cassecou!
Title (alt.):
THE TREE OF LIBERTY. - Indeed! not one friend to yell: watch it!. Charivari
Description:
This print depicts the police governor (Napoléon III) who ordered the so-called liberty trees to be cut down. The citizens of Paris staged a protest march on February 24. This was the day on which France disposed of Louis-Philippe and the country became a Republic, cutting down the "Bourbon Tree". Daumier shows us that Daumier points out that one is bound to get hurt in the process of attacking freedom.
