The monks continue to chant. The cotton string is unraveled from the statue and passed to include each monk who holds it up between his hands while chanting. It is past midnight and most of the laity have gone home; those remaining include the nuns and achar and those members of the laity who will stay the night. In the small bowls between the monks are empty bottles of Vitamin D drink. The more recently ordained monks are reading from a text of Pali in an effort to memorize the chants.
