Letter from Lucy Gwin to CNN Special Assignments Assignment Editor
Description:
Addressed to CNN Special Assignments Editor soliciting them to do a story on the "invisible epidemic" of head injury and exploitation of patients by specialized care facilities. Offers a summary of her accident, resulting brain injury, and advocates for brain injury survivors. Describes hospital and nursing care facilities for head trauma rehabilitation and related economics, including New Medico Head Injury Systems where she received treatment and states she was held there against her will and without due process. Notes this and other similar facilities are unregulated, and describes twice witnessing the rape of her roommate by an aid and two friends once and overhearing rape two other times. Cites a number of sources for follow up, including Dr. Barry Willer of the Rehabilitation Research and Training Center on Traumatic Brain Injury in Buffalo, NY, Hardy Stone, who sits on the President's Committee for Employment of the Disabled, and Dennis Jay Stahl, an official in Georgia's Head Injury Association.
