Letter from Benjamin Smith Lyman to J. Peter Lesley
Description:
Lyman describes his recent work, including calculating the change of distances that has been plaguing his measuring tools due to misused and faulty instruments, and correcting and redoing affected plotting. He proposes and illustrates an improved "target rod," and a combination transit/telescope that would facilitate more efficient topographical surveying. Lyman makes detailed recommendations for analyzing various aspects of coal composition and output for Mr. Lesley's coal business.
