An exterior view of the four-story, Richardsonian Romanesque row houses at 196 (on the left) and 198 Commonwealth Avenue (on the right) in Back Bay, Boston, Massachusetts. Peabody and Stearns designed 196, built in 1881, for Mrs. Elizabeth Elliot Torrey Spooner, the widow of merchant Daniel Nicolson Spooner. Allen and Kenway designed 198, built in 1880, for housewares merchant William A. Matthews. At 196 Commonwealth Avenue , the recessed entrance is to the left of curved bay windows that carry through the third floor and is crowned with a balustrade. At 198 Commonwealth Avenue , the arched recessed entrance, topped by a balustrade, is to the left of a tower surmounted with a conical roof. Dormers with sunburst crowns project from the sloping roof.
