A view of the construction of the subway tunnel between Tremont Street and the Park Street Mall is shown from the Boston Common side of the site. This is the initial section of the first subway system in the United States, which opened on September 1,1897. A substantial portion of the steel framing of the tunnel is in place. Several workers are engaged in various building activities. Park Street Church stands behind the site at the intersection of Park Street and Tremont Street. Commercial buildings line Tremont Street across from the construction site.
