Bracha Weingrod grew up in Winnipeg, Canada surrounded by Yiddish and the many Yiddish communities that made Winnipeg the city it was. She was trained as a Yiddish teacher by the Workmen's Circle. She was a part of Young Judea and was an activist for Israel, which is how she met her husband. After the 1973 war, they moved their family to Israel where she worked in education, specifically for the Dyslexic. A major part of her work has been trying to get Israel to embrace Yiddish orthography for Hebrew. That is, use the vowels that are a part of the Hebrew Alphabet. She remained committed to Yiddish but did not have people with whom to speak. A friend of hers knew she was interested in Yiddish books and sent her a cookbook in Yiddish that promptly went on a shelf in her home. While in New York she helped with translation for an oral history project dealing with Italian and Jewish women. She realized that no story of the home is complete without the story of the kitchen and picked up the cookbook again. This time, she fell in love with the book. The woman who wrote the book was a strong powerful woman way ahead of her time. She was concerned with people dropping their unhealthy old country ways and used this cookbook to teach about the new country. Bracha started translating the cookbook as a personal endeavor, but was encouraged by friends to publish the book so that more people could enjoy the book too. She found out how to self-publish the book and has been selling it independently to others. Bracha's dream is that an army of translators will work their way through Yiddish literature and make these amazing works available to everyone.
