Sir George Williams founded the YMCA in 1844 after moving to London during the Industrial Revolution . Williams found the moral conditions of the city incompatible with his evangelical Christian outlook and aimed to provide a place where young men could partake in healthy activities for the mind, body and spirit. The YMCA was formed and the movement quickly spread across England, Scotland and Ireland and in 1851 extended to North America. Williams maintained a lifelong affiliation with the association and in 1894, the fiftieth anniversary of the YMCA's founding, was knighted by Queen Victoria. Sir George died in 1905 and was buried in St. Paul's Cathedral. He is commemorated with a stained glass window in London's Westminster Abbey.
This lantern slide is part of a series of eight slides that appear to be on YMCA history, mostly concerning George Williams. The series includes LS-06-01, LS-06-02, LS-06-03, LS-06-04, LS-06-05, LS-06-06, LS-06-07, and LS-06-08. Most of the series was created by Jonathan A. Rawson Jr. (347 Madison Ave., New York City), except LS-06-05 which was created by Scott Studios, (Scott Studios, 24 E. 55th St., New York City). Several of these images were reprinted in the October, 1921 issue of Association Men (Student Edition).
