Sword - Revolution - Braided hilt, knob - used at Fort Ticonderoga by donor's grandfather, James M. Chase. James Chase b. 1822 - reference may be incorrect. Smallsword with cast brass hilt, and light, narrow thrusting blade of hexagonal cross section. The hilt is made of 4 separate cast brass pieces: an oblong globular pommel decorated with groups of incised lines. The pommel has a finial like extension at the bottom where the tang of the sword passes through and is riveted to secure the sword together. A grip cast to mimic the texture of braided wire, square in cross section with a pronounced swell in the center of the grip. The guard of the sword comprises a double shell to protect the hand as well as a quillon block, finger loops, and missing knuckle bow.
