Although their website claims they were an active presence in the community since 1854, their constitution and first annual report were not published until 1859. The Lancaster YMCA building was demolished in 1965 and replaced by a parking garage erected between 1970-1971. Cassius Emlen Urban (February 26, 1863 – May 21, 1939) designed the building, which was located on the corner of North Queen Street and Orange Street. He was the town’s leading architect from the late 19th century through the early 20th century. Urban graduated from Lancaster’s Boys High School in 1880 and then apprenticed as a draftsman at the E.L. Walter architectural firm in Scranton, Pennsylvania. He also worked in the office of Willis G. Hale in Philadelphia, but returned to Lancaster in 1886. Nine of his buildings are listed on the National Registry of Historic Places.
