Freeland was president of the University from 1996 to 2006. Prior to his work at NU, Freeland held positions at the University of Massachusetts and the City University of New York. Pres. Freeland received his bachelor's degree in Am. Studies from Amherst College and a doctorate in Am. Civilization from the U. of Pennsylvania.
