Description:
This photograph depicts the Philomethean Literary Society of 1920 of the International YMCA College, now Springfield College. Men are depicted sitting and standing in three rows. The photograph was taken inside a gymnasium on a basketball court, presumably in Judd Gymnasia. Each society had a faculty member critic to help in the success of the debate skills of the societies’ members since the greatest interest of these societies were the annual inter-society debates. The Philomethean Society had Professor Ralph Cheney as its critic, who sits in the middle of the photograph. On this year, “the Philomethean Society went down to defeat the Weidensall team. The men have been able to gain more poise and ability to think while addressing an audience in this year’s practical work. Each of the societies has been greatly assisted by the willing help and interest of the faculty critics, both in their individual activities and in their union meetings” (The Massasoit, 1920). The president of the society was F. S. Mathewson, the vice-president, H. B. Fulton and the Secretary-Treasurer, J. C. Ford.
