EN ALLEMAGNE. - Emballons toujours! précaution est mère de la sureté.
Title (alt.):
IN GERMANY. - Pack everything! caution is the mother of safety.. Charivari
Description:
Of this late Daumier print there exists a sample printed sur blanc in a German private collection. Possibly it is the one of the former Dreyfus collection. Here we see men packing in a hurry in reference to the Prussian war. The war between Prussia and Austria had started and was won by Prussia in the battle of Sadowa. Silesia as well as the Province of Holstein became Prussian (formerly Danish). A truce was signed in Prague in August 1866. Daumier shows us a rather unrealistic image, where inhabitants of the newly annexed provinces are packing their belongings in order to flee from the Prussian invaders.
