Dearing was Springfield College’s Distinguished Professor of Humanics during the 1997-1998 academic year. During this time, he started a weekly column in the Springfield Student newspaper called, “Reflections on Humanics.” In his final column from the week of April 30, 1998, Dearing states that as Distinguished Professor of Humanics and at the Humanics Lecuture a week ago, he shared a lot of words and stories. He states that the biggest response he has had this year has been to the picture taken at the STOP EVERYTHING FOR HUMANICS DAY. Many people have responded asking for a copy of the picture. Dearing explains that the picture will soon be available and that the profits will go into a soon to be formed Student Humanics Scholarship. Dearing states that he also hopes to have a “Collection of Humanics Reflections” available by September in which hall of his weekly “Reflections on Humanics” will be contained along with the responses he received throughout the year. Dearing states that the proceeds from this book will also go towards the Student Humanics Scholarship. Dearing earned his BS from Springfield College in 1979 and taught as an associate professor of Physical Education at the college. Dearing also coached women’s volleyball for 22 seasons (1989-2010). He finished his career with a win-loss record of 595-196 and a .752 winning percentage. Dearing was the recipient of several different Coach of the Year honors throughout the years.
