Ray Gilbert received his bachelor's degree from Springfield College in physical education in 1963, playing basketball throughout his college career. He later returned to Springfield to receive his master's, while serving as the assistant men's basketball and assistant golf coach from 1963 to 1965. In 1968, Ray Gilbert returned to Springfield College and became a P.E. instructor and the assistant coach for men's basketall. He then was named as assistant athletic director and the men's golf coach in 1977, followed by the women's golf coach in 1980. Gilbert eventaully accepted a position as the Director of Physical Education and Athletics at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 1987.
