Flanders played defensive end for the football team throughout his four years at Springfield, and majored in biology/pre-med. He was named one of 1985's 11 National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame Scholar-Athletes. He was also a two-time All New England first team selection and a first team Academic All American, chosen by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Flanders was a recipient of the DeOrmond "Tuss" McLaughry Award from the Western Massachusetts Chapter of the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame. Paul U. Congdon was the school’s fourteenth Distinguished Springfield Professor of Humanics.
