- Title:

- Description:
-
Springfield College published “Basketball Was Born Here,” a thirty-five page pamphlet describing the early history of the sport, in 2013. It is fourth in a series of four pamphlets created by Springfield College and the Basketball Hall of Fame. The 2013 and 2002 pamphlets were both published by Springfield College. Along the top of each page is a timeline chronicling important events in the history of basketball, starting with its creation in 1891 and ending in 2009. Basketball was invented in December 1891 by Dr. James Naismith while he was a faculty member at Springfield College. The pamphlet begins by describing the series of events that led Dr. James Naismith to create basketball. It then focuses on three key events: the evolution of rules and equipment, the birth of women’s basketball, and international growth. The pamphlet also describes other influential Springfield College alumni, such as Edward Hickox, John Bunn, Edward Steitz, Edward Bilik, Charles Brock, and Naomi Graves. “Basketball Was Born Here” closes by discussing the creation of the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame, Springfield College inductees to the Basketball Hall of Fame, and the school’s history.
