Nick discusses how the war has affected France; thousands of people have lost everthing they own and depend on the generosity of others, only the young and old are left in the towns, and every family has lost people. It is difficult for him to get mail in the Northern part of the country so he has his mail sent to the American Post and then the men there forward it to him. Nick has gone to the British Y.M.C.A. a few times, whenever he hears music there he longs to be back with Letty.
