Nick has returned from a three day trip paying sick and wounded soldiers at different hospitals. When he returned to Rouen there were two letters from Letty, the first mail he has received since leaving Tours. Nick is now allowed to tell Letty about the places he has been and what he has seen so he gives her a an overview of where he has been since leaving America. After a seven day journey across the Atlantic on the "Olympic" he landed in Liverpool, England. They went to Winchester, England for a week where Nick saw the cathedral he wrote about. Next he went to Southampton, England to board a transport to Le Hovre, France. During the trip across the English Channel they were all packed into the boat like sardines. Nick then spent two weeks in Blais before heading to Tours. In February he travelled across France by himself. He stopped in Paris on Washington's Birthday and then continued to Amiens. During the Spring the Germans made a drive on Amiens, Nick was there during that time. There were many nights that they were bombed by the Germans and Nick sometimes wondered if he would live to see another day. Nick saw many of the ruins in Northern France, in the section that had been taken by the Germans and then won back by the British and French. Eventually, they had to evacuate Amiens and moved their offices to Abbeville. In August he returned to Tours, and had another opportunity to visit Paris. He has been able to travel to many towns in Northern France.
