Greek Orthodox Holy Friday celebration : Young girl and her godmother light candles
Description:
From a series of images culled by Borchers for a slideshow of her work. Camera caption: "April 13, 2001 - Elizabeth Sullivan, 11, Warwick, and her godmother Angela San Souci, North Scituate, light candles at the entrance to the Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation, 175 Oaklawn Ave., before the Great Friday service at the church. Later, Elizabeth and other children helped decorate the tomb of Jesus with white carnations. Children of the Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation will gather to decorate with flowers the Epitafio, the tomb of Jesus, which will be used in the Holy Friday service later in the day. This is an opportunity for us to acknowledge the Orthodox, who we usually ignore because their Easter usually comes later. For the first time in more than a decade, Orthodox as well as Protestant and Catholic churches have observances on the same day. (Orthodox call it Great and Holy Friday.)."
