An intermission, at thirty degrees Celsius of heat.. Charivari
Description:
Some men are outside during an intermission of a play and trying to get some fresh air during the summer. "La canicule" or "Dog-Days" were the extremely hot and humid summer days one still encounters nowadays between July 3 and August 11 in Paris. A great problem for the producers was the summer season, when the dog-days started to immobilize the social life in Paris. Nobody came to see a play and the theaters were writing heavy losses, unless they were supported financially by the State. Only the important houses like the Opera, the Théatre Français, the Opéra Comique, the Odéon and the Théatre Italien were subsidized, while the small theaters suffered.
