'I chose this photo because it shows my uncle Joe, a well-known fisherman in New Bedford. He came to the U.S. in the 1940s and when the immigration law changed in 1965, he sponsored four of his five siblings and their families to come to New Bedford. He and his wife, Eulalia, were very generous, providing housing and guidance to us all as well as jobs for the men aboard their fishing boats, including the 'Connie-F.' and the 'Nautilus.' Most of the men did not stay fishing with uncle Joe for long, though. Nicknamed 'Hurricane Joe,' he was known for going out in all kinds of weather as well as for his forceful personality. He was lost at sea during a storm.'
