'My first job at the library was driving the bookmobile around the city and it was one of my favorite jobs ever. Along with volunteer Alice Stowell, or library staffer Virginia Waldron, I would drive out to daycare centers, reading and singing with the kids. The seniors were also very appreciative of the service, a lifeline for avid readers with limited mobility (we still serve home-bound patrons with monthly deliveries in a regular old truck, and the children's staff deliver books and other materials to the daycare centers in their own cars). I only had a year in the bookmobile before handing over the keys and becoming an indoor librarian. Driving the bookmobile was an extraordinary way for me to get to know Waltham both geographically and socially. Library services were consolidated later as part of the expansion of the main library, so the branches and the bookmobile were only around for one or two more years. Pictured: Kate Tranquada.'
