My grandson collecting funds for Hurricane Katrina victims
Description:
'Email from John Savarese to his daughter Liza O'Kane describing collection efforts of his grandson, Neo Anderson Savarese, age 3 1/2, collecting funds for Katrina victims. Story and photo appeared on front page of Daily News Tribune. Date: Sun, 4 Sep 2005 08:48:09 -0400 Subject: Emailing: Neo-collecting for hurricane. Hi Liza: Wish you could've seen Neo in action the other day. Friday morning I was watching CNN and was so disgusted by the damage caused by Hurricane Katrina I decided I had to do something. I asked Neo to watch a little with me and explained what was going on and that we should try and collect money to help these poor people. We got a cardboard box and wrote 'Hurricane Relief Fund' on it and stood in front of Dunkin' Donuts for two hours, then in front of the Stop & Shop for two hours. I wish you could've seen Neo. Just from what I told him earlier, he was shouting to people: 'Put money in the box for the poor people who had a very very big storm. Now they have no houses and no clothes and no food.' He was really shouting this and with such expression in his face and voice, waving his hands. The people could not help but stop and listen to him and then they put money in. And all on his own, he would change his spiel and say things like 'We're collecting for. . .' The only thing I ever said to him was, 'Neo, we have to ask these people to give money,' and he took it from there, telling them why they had to give. I just kind of stood in the background. Even when some people just walked by he would loudly say to me 'Hey Pa, how come they didn't put money in the box to help the people?' The people would smile and sheepishly walk back and make a donation. I was so damn proud of him. We collected $987 and are giving it to the Salvation Army. It was a good experience for Neo and me. We met so many nice, compassionate people. Even two homeless people gave money! Can you believe that? Love, Dad. Pictured: Neo Anderson Savarese.'
