'These two combine Mayhew genes tracing back 32 times to Thomas Mayhew the Governor. She descended from Mayhew in 15 different lines and he had 17 lines. So my husband has 32 direct lines back to Governor Thomas Mayhew. As a genealogist, I find this delightful. The story is that after they were married on Friday evening at the First Congregational Church in West Tisbury, her father locked the doors as they left so no one could follow them. There were no evening ferries in those days and he knew his daughter would be terribly embarassed by the shivaree the young folks planned. She was a nurse and the first superintendent of the MV Hospital. He was an engineer on the steamships (the ferries). Pictured: Beatrice Gifford, Everett Mayhew.'
