Title (alt.):
Charivari. The thermometer of the engineer Chevalier was right..... at 10° the large rivers as well as the noses have caught a cold.... just imagine that it might take three weeks for my nose to thaw!...

In the street, a crowd is gathered in front of a large thermometer. Jean Gabriel Augustin Chevalier(1778-1848) came from an established old family of opticians in Paris. He attached a thermometer outside of his shop on the Quai d’Horloge which was regularly consulted by the Parisians.
