Exploring the reasons for the ex-patient movement and its basic assertion of human rights. Focusing on forced treatment and detention as well as the oppressive atmosphere of institutions, at which suffering is often perpetuated. Including a list of rights and freedoms which the author claims are "basic to meeting patients' clinical needs in context of their legal rights." Stressing the importance of the advocate role in a mental health setting and a "more cooperative and less paternalistic approach" towards treatment.
