Concerning Lumb's interest in spinal cord injury after he patented a prosthesis which replaced on vertebra in a dog and a graduate student's research into whether the spinal column can be shortened one spinal segment without prosthetic replacement. Another graduate student of Lumb's is studying the effects of nerve growth factor; Lumb believes this should be given a trial in the central nervous system. There is a handwritten note from Bartels to Rick in the margins of the first page.
