Rice writes to Veale to explain why she thinks psychiatrists keep saying there isn't any brain damage from electroconvulsive therapy. She states that it is the psychiatrists, not the patients, that accept that the clinical use causes the damage. However, this was more apparent when patients did not need to give consent to be shocked. Now though, Rice believes that doctors are forced to lie to patients, stating there is no brain damage or memory loss, in order to coerce them into signing the consent forms. Rice notes that it is interesting to see how the remarks about ECT brain damage in psychiatric literature have changes over the decades. Rice has provided a reference list with quotes. Rice enclosed a letter from Psychiatric News where Dr. A. E. Bennett says that ECT doesn't damage the brain.
