Theories of deviance: implications for a public mental health system.
Description:
Paper written by Raymond J. Baxter, PH.D., Assistant Director, Division of Mental Health, New Jersey Department of Human Services. The paper discusses the various levels of deviance in society, how deviant behavior can develop, and how deviant behavior is classified and what society does to control this behavior. The conclusion made was how they currently define and treat deviance has reinforced the stigma, social rejections, and harsh treatment of people who are classified under 'mentally ill'. Therefore, they should be working to better meet the need of individuals and not be so quick to apply stereotypes to them based on their so-called deviant behavior.
