Photo of an 18th century fire engine, with two men riding it by Arlington photographer William J. Doane. May not be an Arlington scene. Donor reached out to the curator Shelburne County Museum in Nova Scotia - respondent says that Doane likely came from around Barrington, Nova Scotia. He says that many with that surname came from Chatham, MA in 1700s and settled there. The curator goes on to describe the pump engine they have in their collection, a Newsham Fire pumper c. 1740 - purchased by the Chamber of Commerce in 1785. Richard Newsham was a button maker in London before chainging his occupation in 1726 to make fire pumpers.
