Le MARQUIS MARRAST. Nouvelle tenue adoptée par le Président de l'Assemblée Nationale pour ses petites réceptions familières.
Title (alt.):
THE MARQUIS DE MARRAST. New dress code adopted by the President of the National Assembly for his intimate family receptions.. Charivari
Description:
A caricature of Armand Marrast (1801-1852), editor of the Republican "La Tribune" and "Le National". He preached permanent riot and was called the marquis of the revolution of 1830. He escaped being arrested as one of the defendants of the April trials by fleeing the country. On July 13, 1835 he succeeded, together with Godefroy Cavaignac and 26 other fellow prisoners, in digging a tunnel out of Sainte-Pélagie prison. The prisoners were able to escape abroad and avoid being sentenced by a politically manipulated judicial system. In 1848, he was elected member of the provisional government and Mayor of Paris as well as President of the Assembly. He was later appointed Minister of Finance.
