Title (alt.):
NATIONAL GUARD PRISON. If only you had done your guard service, you'd have had lunch with Riflot and played billiards with Fouillet, who owed you a return match in any case. Little Lolotte would have had her prettyboy over for dinner.... and your wife, oh you unhappy man, your own wife, while you are sitting in jail..... oh, better not think about it!..... Charivari
Description:
A member of the National Guard is sitting in police custody depressed and unhappy about the events of his day. His fantasies are depicted in small drawings, similar to cartoons or Italian "fumetti". The "Hôtel des Haricots" was one of the prisons of the National Guard and is located near Quai d'Austerlitz in Paris. This print is from a series that Daumier completed while he was serving a prison sentence (first in the prison St. Pélagie) at the hospital for the mentally ill of Dr. J.P. Casimir Pinel.
