Within this collection, we have limited sources from Helmut Hirsch's girlfriend - Vally Petrova. Although her statement here is only 3 pages, it gives more insight into Hirsch's political activities and the events that lead to his arrest in Stuttgart. Based on the evidence, Hirsch, Kate (Cathering Sugarman) and Vally were all close. Vally indicates that she didn't become aware of Hirsch's association with the Schwarzen Front until the end of November 1936. She mentions they had some conversations around his political work, but Hirsch always avoided giving too much detail. As she discusses their relationship, she notes that he became increasinly dissastified and endured with difficult the faculty members at the Deutsches Technik Hochschule who became Nazi party members. Vally said their love of literature and art. They also had a common interest in Marxist ideology. Moreover, she claims that Hirsch's dream was to be a diplomat, and he eventually got his Czech citizenship. By the beginning of December, Vally noticed that Hirsch grew increasingly nervous. She says in her statement that she tried to get more information about his trip to Germany. Hirsch gave Vally letters to be opened if he did not return. According to Vally, Hirsch claimed that although his trip was dangerous there should be no trouble. Toward the end of her statement, Vally states that since Hirsch appeared to be confident, she did not tell anyone about this trip. When he did not return, she went to Kate to deliver the letter. The last line of her statement is a call to action -- that Hirsch's death must strengthen the conviction in the fight against facism. Vally signed each page of her statement.
