"ECOLOGY OF A MOUNTAIN" (FEATURES ED THOMPSON) "A SLICE OF TIME"(SIDELING HILL) "TRIBUTARTY TRIBULATIONS" (HEALTH OF MD STREAMS) Part one of this three-part episode, explores the Greenridge mountains; the amount of exposure to the sun affects the different environments found on a mountainside. One environment is a shale barren, populated with lizards and snakes. Different types of plants are also found in different environments on the mountain. Part two takes a look a Sideling Hill's geography and syncline mountains, which has water with the mountain; the flow of water within the rock helps prevent erosion. And part three focuses on the health of tributaries. Based on the lack or growth of young species living within the water can help predict the river's vitality; finding a growth in species in the stream, in this case brown trout, equates to good water quality. The biologists find the brown trout through electrofishing; this way they are able to monitor the population of the fish before releasing them back into the water. Some of the fish they release into a stream of lower water quality, if the fish survive that means that river's water quality has improved.
