Printers and other employees of the Holyoke Daily Transcript pose in the windows and doorways of the building. Neighboring buildings at the corner of John and High Streets are visible. To the right is the storefront of John Howe, Baker. To the left is a sign for a dressmaker (Mrs. Mack) and James M. Daly's tea shop. The name Ryan is also on a sign to the left. A horse and buggy are in the street. The address of the Transcript building was later changed to 172 High Street. City directories indicate that this area of High Street, one of the city's earliest commercial districts, was home to the Transcript Publishing Company from the 1860s, but the date these buildings were erected is uncertain. The buildings in this image may have replaced earlier structures in this location.
