Second published state. The steel-facing put on in the First Published State rusted and damaged the copper, and it became necessary to remove the facing and rework the plate in parts. The dark plumage of the wing of the middle bird of the central group is renewed by fairly heavy lines slanting from left to right; the legs of the middle bird of the central group are defined by lines following the contours; the shading which darkened the breast of this bird in the preceding state was removed with the burnisher, leaving it practically white; the breast and leg of the bird at the right of the central group are darkened by new lines slanting from left to right; the under part of this bird is also shaded with a few lines from right to left; the middle bird of the group in the middle distance is shaded with regular slant lines from right to left; the wing of the bird at the left of the group in the middle distance is darkened by a set of regular vertical lines. Eighty-two proofs, signed and numbered from 25 to 106, on Shogun paper. About eight of these proofs are printed on Shogun paper made yellowish in color by soaking it in coffee.
