The tall buildings which give the plate its name extend in an irregular and broken line on the farther side of a sheet of water to the left. Near the middle, but somewhat to the right, is a square church tower with high pinnacles. A man sits at the end of a barge moored alongside of the quay in the foreground. The side of a warehouse extending 20 to 23 mm. from the left side of the plate was white in the earlier states ; it is now closely shaded with horizontal lines.
